The seven-second test every business website should pass

A stranger should understand what you do, who it is for, and what to do next — in seven seconds. Most business websites fail this test. Here is how to fix yours.

JJay Dasondee

Open your website. Now imagine a stranger landing on it for the first time, on their phone, half-distracted. In about seven seconds they decide whether to stay or leave. If the page has not answered three questions by then, they are gone — and no amount of ad spend buys them back.

The three questions

  1. What do you offer?
  2. Who is it for?
  3. What do I do next?

Not your mission. Not your founding story. Not a carousel of stock photos. Those three answers, above the fold, in language a customer would use.

Why most sites fail it

The usual culprits:

  • The headline describes the company, not the customer's win. "We are a full-service studio committed to excellence" tells a visitor nothing they can act on.
  • Everything is equally loud, so nothing leads. When ten things compete for attention, the eye picks none.
  • The next step is hidden. If the only way forward is a buried "Contact" link, you have made the customer do work. They will not.

The fix

Lead with the outcome the customer wants, in their words. Make one action obviously the main one. Remove every sentence that does not help a stranger decide. Clarity is not dumbing down — it is respect for a busy person's attention.

A simple test: show your homepage to someone outside your industry for five seconds, then hide it and ask what you do and who for. If they cannot say, your customers cannot either.

Clarity compounds

This is not a one-time polish. Every ad, every landing page, every WhatsApp reply should carry the same clear message. When the message is consistent, traffic converts; when it is muddled, you pay to send confused people away.

Get the seven seconds right and everything downstream — ads, SEO, funnels — works harder for the same spend. Get it wrong and you are filling a leaking bucket. We start every engagement here, because nothing else pays off until this does.
